Assistant Athletic Director for Communications

  • Responsibilities:
    Assistant Director of Athletics for Communications serves as the liaison between department and the news media; directs, supervises and controls the dissemination of sports publicity and other athletic department printing for intercollegiate athletic, including news releases, features, photography, statistics, press box/game day operations, publications, graphics, video and other creative content. Coordinates all efforts within social media between media relations and marketing. Oversees both full time staff, graduate assistants, and student workers. Responsible for the regular and continuous development of high-quality public relations between the department and the region.

    Directs, supervises, and controls the dissemination of sports publicity -
    • Generates interest in athletic programs through information dissemination to the media; including radio, newspaper, social media, television and other community outlets.
    • Coordinates athletics broadcasting services for radio, television, and webcasts. Serves as liaison between above media outlets and the athletics department.
    • Work directly with marketing department to coordinate printing of all schedule cards, posters, brochures, programs and media guides.
    • Integrates new media efforts with marketing and media relations.
    • Researches former student-athletes and staff members as well as maintains accurate files and record books.
    • Coordinates all press box operations during, including assignment of seating for writers, statisticians, visiting SID, photographers and Establishes communications and enforces press box and post-game interview policies.
    • Prepares departmental press releases on a regular and timely basis.
    • Arranges and coordinates media coverage of university athletic events.
    • Attends home contests for purposes of gathering statistics and assisting Reports results of games, both home and away. Accompanies athletic teams on road trips to promote the athletic department and the university.
    • Prepares and retains records on assigned sports and participating student-athletes.
    • Participates in all athletic events, special events, meetings, and all other public relation ventures. Assists in the recruitment of student-athletes by generating interest in Leatherneck Athletics through multimedia strategies.
    • Responsible for the maintenance and advancement of the athletics department website.
    • Recruits, supervises and instructs graduate and student assistants .
    • Initiates, coordinates and conducts campaigns to achieve conference, regional, and national honors for student-athletes, coaches & staff members.


    Serves as the liaison between media outlets and the athletic department -
    • Maintains working relationship with media personnel and responds to informational requests.
    • Provides timely, accurate responses to media and public information requests.
    • Provides media training to coaches, administrators, and student-athletes.
    • Creates interest in the athletics program on a daily basis, continual basis.


    Coordinates marketing campaigns through social media, website, and promotions -
    • Provides education on social media use to all
    • Suggests, schedules and coordinates media interviews and public speaking appearances by athletics staff, coaches and student-athletes. Provides advice on media relations matters to athletics staff, coaches and student athletes.
    • Creation and oversight of multimedia design (video and graphic design)
    • Supervises the printing of all schedule cards, posters, brochures, programs and media guides. Coordinates the bidding process.
  • Required Qualifications:
    1. Bachelor's degree in journalism, sports communications, sports marketing, sports management, public relations, communications, English, or a related field.
    2. One (1) year (12 months) of professional experience working in the athletic communications/sports information field.
    3. Progressive experience in sports information at the NCAA D-1 or D-II levels.
    4. Progressive experience using StatCrew software.
    5. Progressive experience using SIDEARM or comparable websites.
    6. Progressive experience supervising staff.


    Note: Master's Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year (12 months) of work experience.

  • Starting Salary: $4206/month
