About the Position:

CSUF Athletics Academic Services (AAS) proudly serves all 400+ Division I Varsity NCAA student-athletes. Our mission is to provide effective life skills and academic support services for CSUF student-athletes to encourage timely graduation and to ensure student-athletes receive the information they need to be in compliance with institutional and NCAA rules governing continuing eligibility. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as the Athletics Academic Services Assistant Director (Student Services Professional IV). CSUF Athletics Academic Services (AAS) is in search for an Assistant Director with advising, admission, technology, and leadership experience. We are looking for an individual who is extremely organized and has the aptitude to work in a fast-paced, diverse environment as well as be flexible with regard to changes in processes and procedures to better support student-athletes. Under the supervision of the Director of Athletics Academic Services, the Assistant Director of Athletics Academic Services is responsible for providing comprehensive complex academic advisement, counseling, and proactive monitoring to student athletes in assigned sports, in accordance with institutional and NCAA rules, guidelines, and regulations. Performs Early Warning Grade Checks, sets up Missed Class Travel Letters for University approved travel, and follows up with faculty and coaching staff as appropriate. Participates in Scholar Athlete, Welcome Back, FACE, Student-Athlete Orientation meetings and other recognition programs. Develops and teaches NCAA Life Skills and other workshops/seminars and assists with special projects and initiatives, as assigned. Plans and develops creative solutions which integrate approaches across organizational lines. Deals with complex and sensitive issues in reference to interpretation NCAA rules and regulations. Uses independent judgment in addressing complex problems as appropriate. Develops solutions to individual student and department problems. Assists students in identifying their problems, thinks them through, evaluates them realistically, deals with their aptitudes and abilities related to their needs and circumstances, select suitable educational goals, and implements corrective measures to alleviate skills deficiencies. Develops solutions to individual student problems which represent integrative solutions comprising appropriate elements of all appropriate Student Services instructional programs. Serves as the lead for Admissions providing leadership for the AAS Admissions process for all prospective student-athletes including oversight of day-to-day operations and initiating new processes regarding late applications, unofficial and official transcript evaluations, exceptions, eligibility certifications, and historical reports. Serves as the AAS liaison to Admissions. Provides leadership for the Athletics Life Skills Program and assists the Director in guiding the department's Life Skills Coordinator with regards to organizing and coordinating events in the areas of DEI, career development, leadership, financial literacy, drug and alcohol education, health and wellness, overall personal growth, as well as specific events such as FACE, Welcome Back, Spring Kick Off, Titan Awards Night, and Senior Recognition Celebration. Leads and carries out specific leadership programming for student-athletes. Assists Director in oversight of the DEGREE Program and computer lab. Assistant Director of Athletics Academic Services will also serve as the lead for the Graduate Assistant/Intern Mentor program connecting interns with department responsibilities and AAS team members. Will be the lead in training Graduate Assistants and interns in the areas of retention, progress toward degree, and timely graduation, in accordance with NCAA and institutional guidelines, to prepare them for future careers in student support services specifically geared towards student-athlete support. Weekly or bi-weekly trainings will be a part of this education piece. Will create and produce media content for AAS monitors and social media sites. Other duties as assigned.


Essential Qualifications:
Bachelors degree or the equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution. Four years of professional student services work experience including experience advising students individually and in groups, as well as the analysis and resolution of complex student services problems. A masters degree from an accredited college or university in counseling, clinical psychology, social work or a job related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctoral degree from an accredited college or university and the appropriate internship or clinical training in a relevant field may be substituted for two years of professional experience.

General knowledge of the problems and methods of public administration, including organizational, personnel, and fiscal management. Knowledge of advanced statistical and research methods. Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, supervise, and organize programs and activities. Ability to interact with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the public. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action. Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters. Ability to complete assignments without detailed instructions. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of campus procedures, activities and of the overall organization.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.


Preferred Qualifications:
Excellent written and oral communication skills. Extremely organized and comfort with navigating, utilizing, and implementing new technology in day-to-day tasks. Aptitude to work in a fast-paced, diverse environment and be flexible with regards to changes in processes and procedures to better support student-athletes. Ability to take constructive feedback as well as collaborate and work in a team atmosphere.

A Masters degree from an accredited college or university in a related field is preferred. At least one year in the program area is also preferred.
