PURPOSE:

Under the general supervision of the Director of Athletics, the Assistant Athletic Director for Athletics Communications will manage all-inclusive coverage of Otter Athletics, to include media relations, communications, and home game operations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Serves as primary, day-to-day Athletics Communications contact for the department for all external media stakeholders, including conference (CCAA & WWPA) and NCAA DII media relations offices.
  • Manages all athletics communications activities, including, but not limited to, athletics website (OtterAthletics.com), video streaming (CCAA Network), social and other multi-media content, media interviews, press conferences, and statistical archives.
  • Works with the Director of Athletics to ensure all planning, scheduling, administration, staging, and evaluation are accomplished for successful home game operations.
  • Proactively adapting to an ever-changing Athletics Communications landscape to ensure efficient operations and maximum productivity.
  • Ensuring appropriate communications strategies and execution are coordinated with University Communications to ensure consistent messaging and alignment with broader vision.
  • Informing and preparing Director of Athletics and Head Coaches for interviews, speaking engagements and other appearances
  • Oversight and execution of staff/student-athlete media and social media training.
  • Assists in all aspects of office activity and in coverage of other events, as required.

Other Functions:

Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of communication, public affairs, media and/or marketing theories and concepts in order to develop and execute communication strategies and plans to promote and position the university. Expert knowledge of university communication objectives and ability to translate them into effective communication and media campaigns.

Knowledge of: practices, principles and techniques related to public affairs, media relations, and marketing; protocols and institutional etiquette related to public and media relations; media outlets including print, television, and radio; interview techniques and the ability to define and deliver media messages; market research, summary statistics as they relate to research, and related techniques; applicable software packages; basic web communication techniques, vehicles and formats. Thorough knowledge of applicable copyright and other laws pertaining to publications and the news media.

Skills: Strong story development and journalistic writing skills, as well as advanced editorial skills. Expert networking and interpersonal skills including strong consultative and persuasive skills to work with internal and external constituents and the media. Demonstrated organizational skills.

Ability to: Ability to keep abreast of public policy and public affairs issues; appropriately handle sensitive and confidential information; provide lead work direction; create and maintain relationships with key stakeholders across campus and advise them on university identity and style standards. Ability to understand issues from a broad, strategic perspective; effectively manage media relations and apply effective media strategies and techniques. Demonstrated ability to market story concepts to university officials and media outlets. Ability to use market research to enhance the impact of communication strategies and campaigns. Working knowledge of appropriate use of statistical techniques.


Minimum Qualifications:
Entry to the third level within this classification requires knowledge of the fundamentals of public affairs and/or media relations, and/or some exposure to marketing and marketing research. This background normally is obtained through a college degree, which includes relevant coursework in the field, and up to two years of related professional or technical experience. In addition, strong written and verbal communication skills with a solid foundation in grammar, spelling, and the composition of various communication vehicles are essential to initial entry to this classification.


Specialized Skills:
Demonstrated organizational skills. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships within a diverse, academic environment. Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations as they pertain to athletic communications along with NCAA approved statistical procedures. Additional four (4) years of professional experience in sports information, communications, media relations, and marketing. Ability to: produce excellent internal and external publications; write web-based and media press releases; handle multiple game day activities; coordinate and direct the work of student assistants and event workers. Proficient in or ability to quickly learn Adobe Creative Suite and Automated Scorebook/Statcrew.


Preferred Qualifications:
Masters degree in related field and previous sports information experience in a collegiate athletics department. Proficient in the use of software programs such as Microsoft Office, Internet browsers, or equivalent. Technical fluency with Banner, Oracle/PeopleSoft, CSU Common Management System or equivalent <student/finance> information system; Microsoft Office Professional Suite, and Google mail and calendaring programs.

  • This position is required to comply with confidentiality requirements outlined in the Department of Educations Family Educational Rights and Privacy and Californias Educational Code Chapter 13 regarding sensitive student issues.
  • This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) and will be required to participate in annual training and to immediately forward to the Clery Director all reports of crimes brought to their attention pursuant to the Clery Act and California State Education Code, Chapter 15.5, of the Donahue Higher Education Act, Section 67380.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid license to drive in the State of California, pass the Defensive Training Class, and be insurable under the Universitys liability coverage.
  • May require occasional evenings and/or weekend work.

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. Position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time. Requires travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
